Adref: Homeless hostel in Pontypridd

Adref run a homeless hostel for twelve residents in Pontypridd, offering three month licences to homeless clients who are referred in from Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council Housing Solutions. The hostel is funded by the Supporting People grant.

PERSON A is 25 year old male that was caught up in a chaotic lifestyle that led to him serving 18months in prison; he was involved in criminal activity and was heavily involved with drugs. PERSON A struggled to make any appointments with probation or drug rehabilitation programme services. PERSON A was not able to hold a tenancy successfully and was caught in a cycle of addiction and offending. PERSON A came to the project 01.04.2017 and was in need of real help to allow him to take control of his life. Once settled, PERSON A engaged well with staff and made his probation appointments, became scripted for methadone and started to gain focus.

PERSON A was able to have his appointments in probation reduced to fortnightly instead of weekly. He started to gain his confidence back and relished the support that he received from his key worker and other staff members within the hostel. Whilst at the hostel, PERSON A attended all house meetings and enjoyed the cooking sessions and activities that were in place for all residents. PERSON A felt that the hostel provided a great set of transferable skills to him; he felt that the hostel was a saving grace and had it not been for the hostel, he would have been set down the path of re-offending and drug abuse.

With the support network in place from the hostel, set himself new targets and goals and was able to meet them with the support of the hostel. PERSON A was supported to view a property near his home town and accepted, he has now moved on and has had no new convictions and is still engaging with all the services that were put in place by the hostel support staff. PERSON A has rebuilt relationships with family members that he had little or no contact with prior to coming into the hostel, this has proved to be a great part of his successful move on. PERSON A would say that without the support of the staff at the hostel, he would not be in the positive place that he now is, he is looking forward to a bright future with support in place.
