- Tackling Worklessness Policy Event

A one day policy and practice event from Cymorth Cymru
On September 14th, Cymorth held an event in Rhyl which brought together service providers, service users, commissioners and stakeholders from the welfare to work, skills and training in- dustries to discuss how we can tackle worklessness effectively in Wales.
The event showcased some really innovative and interesting schemes. The day started with a presentation from Us Ultd, a group of young people in the Flintshire area who are working hard to set up their own social enterprise. Following this there were three break-out sessions which showcased different ways of engaging people using services and offering them opportunities to gain valuable skills and experience. Llamau and United Welsh talked about the work they are doing together through targeted recruitment and training to offer young people the chance to work on refurbishing properties. Crest cooperatives and Cartrefi Conwy showcased their scheme which offers individuals the chance to gain skills and training through the recycling of Housing Association stock such as kitchens, which can then be refurbished and sold through Crest's furni- ture centre. Coastal Hawks (pictured) provided a very hands on approach to delegates wanting to find out about how they are offering opportunities to disadvantaged individuals by tackling the seagull problem in Rhyl in a very innovative way.
Following lunch, and a chance to network and visit exhibition stands provided by WCVA and Working Links, delegates had a chance to find out about opportunities to fund projects through WCVA administered schemes such as the Intermediate Labour Market and Future Jobs Fund projects. Following this there were two more breakout sessions. Serco Welfare to Work offered delegates the chance to find out about the government's new welfare to work programme, and what opportunities there were to work with Serco and how their delivery model might suit the sec- tor. Alternatively, delegates had the chance to find out about the excellent work taking place in Rhyl through the Rhyl City Strategy and other partners. The day ended with a presentation from Gofal Cymru about their experiences of social enterprise, the Intermediate Labour Market and working under DWP welfare to work contracts.
