Annual Conference 2019: Challenge the System | Shape the Future

Park Inn Cardiff City Centre

Our annual conference takes place in Cardiff on Thursday 14 March and this year our theme is Challenge the System | Shape the Future.

Last year the sector stood united in the campaign to safeguard funding for homelessness and housing support services in Wales. However, with rising homelessness, inequality and poverty evident in our communities, the challenge facing Wales is greater than ever. With the arrival of the new Housing Support Grant, we have a real opportunity to shape the future of services, but we also need to challenge ourselves, to think differently, to question convention and rethink the systems we operate within.

We are delighted to announce that our keynote speaker is Pat McArdle, Chief Executive of Mayday Trust. The organisation's reports 'Wisdom from the streets' and 'Homelessness System Under Deconstruction' have sparked debate about how we work together to improve our responses to people experiencing homelessness. Pat will share her account of Mayday's transformation from a small housing support provider, to an organisation championing systems-change to support asset-based and personalised approaches.

Once again, we will be working with people who have lived experience of homelessness and support services to present their views, suggesting ways that we can learn from their expertise. There will be a number of plenary sessions, workshops and debates on new and innovative ways to develop our organisations and work more effectively, including topics such as:

  • Reconstructing the system: Pat McArdle of Mayday Trust discusses her organisation's championing of asset-based, person-led approaches and wider change to the homelessness system.
  • Experts by experience discuss their journeys through homelessness and beyond, and present our new report into citizens' feedback about service provision in Wales.
  • Criminalisation of rough sleeping: what impact does this have on our services? University of South Wales PhD student Sarah Bradbeer presents her research.
  • After the Housing Act: what should the future hold? With Dr Peter Mackie, of the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods.
  • Future Generations: are we really meeting the challenge?
  • Reshaping the criminal justice system
  • Homelessness and the private rented sector: how can we work better together?
  • The Housing Support Grant: shaping the outcomes
