POVA
1st February

It is the duty of every citizen, not just employed staff, to report any concerns they may have in relation to the abuse/inappropriate care or suspected abuse/inappropriate care of a vulnerable adult. Independent and voluntary sector organisations have a responsibility to report any suspicions of abuse to the appropriate agencies, as determined by the POVA procedures. This course will increase your understanding of the abuse of vulnerable adults and the action you should take to prevent abuse.
Introduction to Housing Related Support

To provide an introduction to and clear understanding of the key elements of delivering housing related support, homelessness and supported living services. To enable support staff to develop their knowledge, competence, confidence and good practice to deliver appropriate and effective HRS.
ASIST
7th & 8th February
South Wales
Most people considering suicide share their distress and their intentions with others. ASIST training can help you recognise and respond to these invitations to help. It can give you the confidence to ask about suicide if you are concerned about someone's safety. It can provide you with the tools to help prevent the immediate risk of suicide.
The practical training enables participants to recognize someone who is suicidal and gives them the skills and confidence to intervene but also to deal with the emotional legacy of coming into contact with someone who is feeling suicidal.
Counselling Toolkit
10th February

Drawing on a range of therapeutic models, this course will re-visit the nature of the relationship between support staff and the people to whom they provide a service. It will identify implications for practice and provide participants with skills in the use of listening and counselling skills.
Support Planning
13th February

Support Planning is one of the primary tools used in housing related support. Under Supporting People emphasis is placed on accurate needs assessments, the quality of support plans and the involvement of service users to ensure they receive a service that reflects their needs. The principal aim of this course is to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to carry out effective support planning with service users.
Assertiveness
14th February
South Wales
The course will define assertiveness and help participants understand the implications of using non-assertive behaviour in various situations. Human rights issues and barriers to using assertiveness techniques will be identified. By the end of the day delegates will understand the influence that peer pressure has on individual behaviour and learn practical assertiveness techniques, leading to the creation of an action plan to implement the techniques.
Motivational Interviewing
17th February

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a way of supporting people to resolve ambivalence in making changes in their lives. It is a directive non confrontational approach which explores the client's own motivation to change developed by clinical psychologists. This training will provide learners with an introduction to the basic principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and to have an opportunity to practice some of the key skills involved in this way of working with clients.
Young People and Emotional Health - 2 days
20th & 21st February

The focus of the course is on understanding the development of the emotional health of young people, their 'emotional journey' in their transition to adulthood and independence. It aims to provide support staff with an understanding of the key elements which underpin the development of positive emotional health for young people and how emotional and mental health issues can develop.
Dealing with Debt
24th February

With large numbers currently facing unemployment, benefit cuts and rising costs, this course aims to provide an insight into debt, the role of advice & the options available in helping clients resolve their difficulties. The course is aimed at those who have completed the Money Management course and wish to gain further knowledge on the advice process and the options available for those in financial difficulty. This will suit anyone working in a setting where money and debt issues are encountered.
Developing Emotional Resilience: An Introduction to Mindfulness
27th & 28th February

This two-day experiential workshop will introduce participants to mindfulness practices (both formal and 'informal') that are offered in mindfulness-based courses to a wide range of people, including those who experience stress, depression, anxiety, pain, cancer, eating disorders, and within workplaces. By experiencing the practices and reflecting on them as a group, we will have the opportunity to explore their relevance to us personally and professionally.
Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty

The Mental Capacity Act provides a framework to protect people who lack the ability to make decisions for themselves.This applies whether decisions are life changing events or more everyday matters. Anyone who works with or cares for an adult must comply with the mental capacity Act when making decisions or acting for the person they support.
No Recourse to Public Funds

Current legislation leaves many vulnerable individuals without access to publically funded support. Increasingly, these individual's risk 'falling through the gaps' as organisations struggle to meet their needs without the aid of funding. Limited funding and options are available but support organisations need to understand the issues and the process for accessing this support. This training seeks to highlight the real impact on the lives of those with No Recourse to Public Funds and how best to assist them.
Welfare Benefit Trouble Shooter

Ever had a customer who was subject to sanctions, because they missed an appointment or failed to sign-on? Did you hear about the claimant who sold her house and then was disallowed benefit because she has spent all the money really quickly? Overpayments; do they have to be repaid? Backdating; how can I and for how long? What are hardship rules, if you are barred from claiming, for a specific period of time? These are some of the most commonly occurring benefit queries we have, when supporting customers through the complex and confusing world of benefit claims, and our course aims to clear up the mystery and provide the real answers, in the context of welfare reform and future changes introduced by the welfare reform bill.
Mental Health First Aid

This course follows the internationally recognised evidence based Mental Health First Aid Course as licensed by the Welsh Assembly Government. Participants will be issued with a comprehensive manual and on completing the 2 days will be issued with a certificate issued by WAG.
Personal and professional Boundaries
29th March

The relationship between client and support worker is important and is a finely balanced between being overly friendly to being distanced. This course enables support workers to explore relationships and to develop appropriate professional boundaries.
Welfare Benefit Changes

Never has there been a time before, when the UK welfare benefit system was so confusing and complicated, with so many radical changes being proposed and implimented.
This one-day introductory course has been repeatedly well received by both participants and organisations, and aims to introduce the welfare benefits system with simplicity, particularly the distinctions between means-tested, non-means tested, contributory and universal benefits.
The course has been designed to enable delegates to recognise and understand the purpose of the most commonly claimed benefits, focusing on jobseekers and incapacity for work, the social fund, housing benefit and Disability Living Allowance changes

In September 2000, the Welsh Assembly Government (formerly known as the National Assembly for Wales) through its Social Services Inspectorate, launched a guidance document entitled In Safe Hands. This guidance called for the development and implementation of multiagency policies and procedures to protect and support vulnerable adults from abuse and inappropriate care.
The South Wales Adult Protection policy and operational guidance seeks to support good practice and has been developed with a view to embracing the ethos of the In Safe Hands guidance.
Bereavement

Health services are gearing up to deliver more care for people with terminal conditions at home for as long as possible. Hospice-at-home services are growing across Wales. We are all becoming more involved in the deaths of people who we support.

The pace of change continues to increase for all people working in housing related support – and if one thing’s certain, it’s that the pace, depth and challenge of change is not going to ease! Across our sector, we benefit from dedicated, knowledgeable and highly capable staff with a powerful commitment to supporting people to build the life they aspire to. We know however that despite this level of commitment managers, staff and volunteers often find dealing and responding to change highly challenging, and that both health and performance can suffer as a result.
