COVID-19 update 87

Welsh Government removes majority of COVID-19 restrictions

On Friday the First Minister confirmed in a press release and in a written statement that Wales would continue with plans to relax COVID-19 restrictions on the 28th March. Key points include:

  • Face coverings will no longer be required by law in retail settings and on public transport, though they will continue to be recommended in public health advice.
  • The requirement to self-isolate will also move into guidance.
  • A £500 self-isolation payment to support people will continue to be available until June.
  • Face coverings will remain a legal requirement in health and social care settings.
  • Coronavirus risk assessments must continue to be carried out by businesses, with reasonable measures put in place in light of those assessments.

Face masks: Homelessness and housing support services

Section 20, subsection (1) of the latest COVID-19 regulations (page 36) lists the settings in which the legal requirement to wear masks continues to apply - and subsection (7) states that 'social care service' means a regulated social care service under the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016. The regulations do not specifically reference homelessness and housing related support settings, however due to the different interpretations of 'social care' during the pandemic, we have been liaising with the Welsh Government over the weekend to seek clarification. This morning the Welsh Government has been in touch to advise that the legal requirement does not apply to homelessness and housing support services, and organisations should instead follow the guidance.
