Cymorth Cymru calls for rethink in the way we support vulnerable people in Wales

Cymorth Cymru, has called for a substantial rethink of the way in which we provide support to vulnerable people in Wales. The call was made in Cymorth's manifesto for the Welsh Assembly elections, which was published today.

The manifesto calls for specific action on four broad areas. Central to this is a call to increase the Supporting People budget – a programme that has helped over 60,000 people across Wales this year alone. This was protected by the Welsh Government this year, after cross-party support and a national campaign.

Auriol Miller, Director of Cymorth Cymru, said, "Our manifesto focuses on four key areas. Funding for Supporting People; a complete rethink about the way we encourage organisations to help people earlier rather than waiting for crisis point; changes that make it easier for organisations to work together; and a review of the way services are set up – changing those processes so that support is sustainable and organisations do not collapse in the near future."

Currently, the way in which services are commissioned can lead to a race to the bottom on price. The risk, says Cymorth Cymru, is that quality can suffer.

Auriol Miller said, "We want to see a commitment from the next Government that services will be paid based on the cost of delivering that service. We want to see action to change the way we commission so that local authorities and service providers work more closely together. The only people that suffer when there is a drive down on price are those who are vulnerable."

For Cymorth Cymru, the stakes are high. "Some of our members talk about the future with real fear. In the care sector, there are worries about a collapse in providers due to additional costs. In the housing sector, people are concerned that new rules from Westminster will cripple providers. These are not easy problems to solve – but one way of starting to address them is by changing the way we set up services."

Cymorth Cymru will be campaigning on its manifesto throughout the election campaign, and are keen to see the Welsh parties commit to change.

"The status quo isn't helping anyone. We need a rethink, and whatever the outcome of the election, this is the best time to think again."
