Wales’ 24 hour track relay set to clock up 10,000 miles for homelessness charity

BUSINESS men and women will cycle the equivalent of Cardiff to Sydney in aid of Welsh homelessness charity The Wallich.

Running for the second consecutive year, the Cyclone 24 event is the UKs only 24-hour velodrome track relay, and last year, tenacious riders cycled more than 5,000 miles and raised over £17,000.

This year it is estimated that the distance covered will increase, with 24 teams of six cycling 10,000 miles – the equivalent of travelling to Australia.

Cyclone 24 will commence at Newport’s International Velodrome track at midday on October 16, where 24 hours of non-stop cycling will begin.

Cyclone 24 is a joint event between strategic branding agency Stills and The Wallich. For more than 30 years the charity has provided help and support to homeless and vulnerable people across Wales every day of the year.

Riders of all abilities are welcome and practice sessions will be held at the Velodrome prior to the event. The Wallich are encouraging a mixture of participants, whether they are complete cycling amateurs or seasoned pros. Twenty teams have already signed up, including last year’s winners BAE Systems.

Cyclone 24 is being supported by local business The Victoria Park Clinic, as well as award winning Cardiff-based PR agency Effective Communication and Rowe & King. Source Insurance are additional supporters and will provide the individual prizes. Food and drink supporters include 9Bar and Shake Shack. Udderly Smooth cosmetics, who specialise in moisturising & chafing cream are also supporting the event.

Steve Sulley, Managing Director of Stills said: “Partnering with the Wallich on Cyclone 24 was an easy decision for me. They are a charity that change the lives of vulnerable homeless people.

“They don’t just provide a cup of tea on a cold morning, their support systems provide a path to a whole new way of living. That ethos is the reason that we adopted the Wallich as our nominated charity. They are also our neighbours, and we love cycling, so this is the perfect partnership.”

Zoe Westerman, Corporate Relationships Manager at The Wallich said: “We are so grateful to everyone who has supported the Cyclone 24 event.  Cycling is such a fantastic sport to take part in. Not only is it a great form of exercise but also very sociable too, a great way of networking. We look forward to welcoming all new and returning cyclists to this years Cyclone24.”
