Wales cares about refugees

In light of the ongoing refugee crisis, the Welsh Refugee Council has put together some information on the situation together with practical steps that you can take to show Wales cares about refugees:

7 things you need to know

Wales has a proud history of providing sanctuary for refugees.

Over four million refugees have been forced to flee Syria as a result of the on-going conflict; most people are living in neighboring countries.

Over 2,600 people have died crossing the Mediterranean Sea in 2015; this is the same number as asylum seekers currently housed in Wales.

Under 0.1% of the population in Wales were people seeking asylum in May 2015.

There are very small numbers of migrants living in Wales with just 5.5% of the population born outside of the UK (2011 Census).

People seeking sanctuary are being housed in Home Office accommodation in Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and Wrexham but Wales could and should do more.

There is something that you can do, you can make a difference and ensure that support services continue to operate in Wales and across Europe, the UK Government commits to resettling more refugees and Welsh Local Authorities take part in the refugee resettlement scheme.

7 things you can do

Sign petitions calling for the UK Government to accept more asylum seekers and increase support for refugee migrants in the UK.

Fundraise, volunteer and donate money to local services to support asylum seekers and refugees living in Wales:

A donation to the Welsh Refugee Council ensures that we can provide support for asylum seekers and refugees across Wales.
A donation to the Oasis Centre will help provide lunch and a drop in service for asylum seekers and refugees in Cardiff,
A donation to the Trinity Centre will help provide a drop in service for asylum seekers and refugees in Cardiff,
A donation to Displaced People in Action will help ensure refugees voices are heard,
A donation to Asylum Justice will help provide legal advice for migrants in wales to access justice,
A donation to Unity in Diversity will help provide a drop in service for refugees in Swansea.

Donate money and resources to migrants in Europe, this could be through giving things to local groups who are travelling to Calais or donating to European grassroots charities that provide practical support to migrants in Europe.

Have challenging conversations with people about migration in the street, around the table and in your schoolyard. Learn more about refugees and migration and be vocal in your support to make Wales welcome.

Join us to march in solidarity as Wales says #Refugeeswelcome on the 12th September in Cardiff meeting at the Aneurin Bevan Statue, Queen Street.
