The HSG allows us to support our most vulnerable tenants providing ongoing support with the individual needs at the forefront

Derek and Malcom

Derek and Malcolm live in private supported living accommodation but for years struggled with their health, hoarding and hygiene. Derek had a passion for keeping different collectables ever since his childhood but it came to the point that they were a fire hazard. Meanwhile, Malcolm enjoys eating out and being part of his local community but in doing so, wastes fresh food at home and couldn’t keep up with what to eat and when by

Those closest to Derek and Malcolm raised their concerns with Cartrefi Conwy who arranged a Tenant Support Officer (TSO) and Tenancy Support Co-worker to visit their property. Derek and Malcolm said that they would like support and encouragement in disposing of rubbish and help in managing waste and recycling. Work was carried out at a pace which suited them. It proved to be a complicated process as some of the collectables included ‘sharps’. Malcolm also received specific support on time management and food organisation, in order to reduce waste.

A positive working relationship was formed resulting in both Derek and Malcolm engaging well and completing tasks set out by the TSO, now they’re keeping ahead of the daily chores. Their health and wellbeing are heading to the right direction, which led to Derek opening up about his fear of the outside. With the TSO, his support worker reached out to his GP and after being given help, he feels he’s in a much better place and knows what to do if he needs help again. As well as psychological support, Derek was also happy to have cameras installed, so he feels at ease during the night.

Cartrefi Conwy say that support like this isn’t possible if it wasn’t for the Housing Support Grant (HSG): “The difference that the HSG has on the organisation is that it allows us to support our most vulnerable tenants providing ongoing support with the individual needs at the forefront.

We ensure and implement the importance of partnership working and look at other agencies and opportunities that we can identify for the individuals to have the best opportunities possible towards their outcomes.”
