I am a lot happier now, and have the support that I need to do the things that I want.

Innovate Trust provides support and guidance to disabled people. Their main work is to support people with learning disabilities, but they also support individuals with mental health issues and people with physical impairments.

Gary* is a 37 year old male with a moderate learning disability and diagnosed Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Gary lived with his parents before coming into 24 hour supported living accommodation.

Gary’s condition can affect him in all day-to-day aspects of living, with Gary finding it difficult to express himself emotionally and socially. Gary finds other people unpredictable, and any lack or changes in routine difficult to cope with. This can make otherwise basic tasks of daily living, such as shopping, difficult and potentially compromise him accessing his community on a daily basis without the appropriate support.

Since 2007, Innovate has actively supported Gary to participate in activities and events within the organisation and his community, using planned support sympathetic to his needs and an awareness of recognising his potential for further independence and growth. The staff team have worked with Gary using a person centred approach alongside an outcomes-based assessment, in line with Supporting People housing related support.

Visual support, consistent daily planning and close link- working relationships, have further supported Gary to move forward and begin to realise his potential to live more independently.

An essentially active and driven individual, Gary had only ever required the catalyst of opportunity, realistic goal setting and consistency of support to progress.

Some of his achievements include:

  • Representing Wales in bowling, as part of the Special Olympics, Isle of White 2012
  • Participating in support worker recruitment interviews, Innovate Trust
  • Board of Management Trustee, Innovate Trust
  • Participating in educational Fire Safety training with South Wales Fire department
  • Running 2 Cardiff half marathons and various other races
  • Assisted Innovate Trust’s Venture Out training
  • Attended Food hygiene and Health & Safety training, Innovate Trust
  • Mount Snowdon climb, 2011
  • Work (volunteer) placements with Greenshoots (Innovate Trust) and Ty Hafan
  • A move to a larger, more independently supported flat within the scheme

Gary has this to say:

“Since being supported by Innovate Trust, I have learned more about myself and what I can do. I am a lot happier now, and have the support that I need to do the things that I want.”
